PENAEUS VANNAMEI CULTURED

Spawning

After a short while the female sheds her eggs which are fertilized during the shedding process. About 15 hours after fertilization, the egg is hatched and the shrimp is born. Metamorphosis still has to take place until it reaches adulthood.

In laboratories it is usual to remove one of the female's eyes because there is a gland in the base of the eye socket which regulates the spawning time. This makes it possible for the female to spawn from
4 to 5 times per month instead of once.
