Of the many types of Penaeidae that exist the ones which are most successfully farmed are the Penaeus Vannamei and the Penaeus Monodon.

Why?
Because it is the only species that is born with a high tolerance to the salinity of the water. They can tolerate 10 to 50 parts per thousand. Other species need between 30 and 40 parts per thousand.

When the water is very salty this species is capable of retaining water and expelling salt, whereas if it is less salty water they can expel the water and retain the salt in order to maintain their salinity.
